Choosing a Domain Name

Choosing the right domain name for your business is crucial, and more important than you might think, as it represents your brand, your company, and your place in the digital world. It’s one of the most important decisions you can make when setting up your business.

A domain name that stands out as a brand or explains what your company does helps you establish your internet presence, and if it’s one that rolls off the tongue, is easy to spell and remember - even better.

Choosing the Right Extension

Even with all the new TLDs (top-level domains), now totalling more than 1,500 the .COM extension is still King and the go-to extension for most companies as it portrays professionalism, longevity, and trust, both online and offline and is recognized worldwide.

Other extensions can and do work, for example; if you were a school or a non-profit you might want the .ORG extension. The .IO extension is also popular among web-savvy startups and tech companies when the .COM is unavailable.

A Company or individual may have set their sights on having a specific name that simply can’t be obtained in the .COM extension (maybe due to budgetary constraints or the current owner won't sell) so go for what they perceive as the next best extension for their business.

There is also the intention of your company to factor in, are you just looking for local business or are you setting yourself up as a global entity? If local, maybe a country-specific extension like .UK would suffice.

However, to start your business off on the best footing, your main aim should be to acquire a .COM - it’s by far the standout extension equating to around 48% of all domain name sales and it’s the one that everyone relates and defaults to.
